What an amazing week for our teens at The Philadelphia Project. We have been so busy. Serving meals to the community. Working with the youth at the Stenton Family Manor. Worshipping God. Growing in our faith. We can't wait to share with you about our trip. Hope to see you this Sunday, June 23rd at church!
Another amazing day at the Philadelphia Project for our mission team. The day started with morning worship and then it was off to the Stenton Manor for a day full of doing the Lord's work . We finished the day with a tour of Philadelphia and everyone's first Philly Cheesesteak. Thank you all for your continued prayers and support.
Amazing first day of ministry for our Philadelphia mission team. We are spending the week working with the Stenton Family Manor a family homeless shelter in Northeast Philadelphia. The teens are in their element spending time mentoring, playing with and building relationships with the children who live at the shelter. Looking forward to what today brings. - Ted
Group photo of our youth group mission trip-goers this morning. Before 6am and these teens are smiling! Maybe it was the breakfast that Pastor Brian & Lisa brought to give them a good send off. Thank you to everyone whose support and prayers are enabling them to serve God and our friends in Philadelphia this week. And, to our fearless leaders, Melanie and Ted, for their sacrifices this summer to take them.
The mission team has arrived in Philadelphia. Looking forward to a week of fellowship, hard work and Jesus. The kids are already getting to know the other kids from the other youth groups....so you get a picture of our leaders instead.
D-Day Litany of Remembrance Gracious and loving God, we pause in the midst of our daily lives, 75 years removed from the horror and violence of D-Day, to remember and to give thanks. O Lord, give us faith. We remember a world weary of the raging global conflict, the vastness of the sacrifices made both around the globe and on the home front, many still reverberating through the generations today. O Lord, give us faith. We remember world leaders and military leaders, those who worked and planned for more than a year to bring this plan to fruition. O Lord, give us faith. We remember the Allied soldiers who fought for Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword Beaches, for those who perished that day and for those who lived, riddled with memories of horrors we have never experienced. O Lord, give us faith. We remember the chaplains of D-Day, those brave men who landed on those beaches without physical weapons, but wrapped in your holy armor, provided spiritual care to the wounded and the dying. O Lord, give us faith. We remember the healers, the medics, the nurses, the doctors who rendered medical care to injured bodies and minds. O Lord, give us faith. We remember the sacrifices of people on the home front, and the mighty upswelling of prayers around the globe when news of the invasion broke, when businesses and schools closed, when the world prayed as one for the success of this mission. O Lord, give us faith. We remember our own family members and friends who participated in D-Day and other World War II battles, for those who worked as Rosies, and for those who prayed for an end to this war. O Lord, give us faith. And we vow to remember, to never forget, the courage and sacrifices made that day, which guard the freedoms we have, and to seek justice and mercy from this day forward. O Lord, give us faith. Amen and amen. *Shared response of O Lord, give us faith is from FDR’s June 6, 1944 prayer broadcast to the nation. Liturgy written by Terri McDougal, Ruling Elder at First Presbyterian, Dunbar "The Light faded and was gone. Deep into the Channel, 59 Darkened convoys went to battle stations as they pushed past the parallel rows of dim buoys, red to starboard, white to port. 'Our flag bridge is dead quiet,' Admiral Deyo wrote on the Tuscaloosa. An officer on the Quincy noted, 'This is like trying to slip into a room where everyone is asleep.' Small craft struggled in the wind and lop. 'Men sick, waves washed over deck,' and LCT log recorded. 'Stove went out, nothing to eat, explosives wet and could not be dried out.' Short seas snapped tow ropes, flooded engine rooms, and sloshed through troop compartments. Some helmsmen held their wheels 30 degrees off true to keep course. Several heaving vessels blinkered a one word message: 'seasick, seasick, seasick.' Down the ten channels they plunged, two designated for each of the five forces steaming toward five beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword. Wakes braided and rebraided. The amber orb of a full moon rose through the thinning overcast off the port bow, and the sea sang as swells slipped along every hull bound for a better world. Hallelujah, sang the sea. Hallelujah. Hallelujah."-Rick Atkinson, "The Guns at Last Light"
